Kelsall Team Sailing on board Flying Carpet
The Kelsall team enjoyed an evening sail aboard Flying Carpet off Waiheke Island, in the Hauraki Golf
near Auckland. Flying Carpet was designed and built by Bernard Rhodes. She is a 38ft, twin rigged catamaran.
It was a most enjoyable evening with a group of friends who have contributed to, and are part of, Bernard's efforts
to launch an 80ft SailBus project. We believe the SailBus is a great project, in need of, and worthy of investment.
The SailBus concept looks set to capture the advantges of KSS build using Bernard's designs.
Bernard has seen KSS in action at one of our KSS Workshops. He, and the other designers who have witnessed the KSS
process, have no hesitation in endorsing KSS as the way forward for all builders interested in efficient build methods.
KSS can be applied to their projects or potential projects. We will supply the build technology but not be making the
main design decisions.
It was particularly interesting to compare Flying Carpet to our Cool Change. Both have the same basic freestanding
mast and both do the job they were designed for on the boats. Flying Carpet has the accent on simplicity. Cool Change's
rig has the accent on efficient sailing. Derek said "he was pleasantly surprised at how well Flying Carpet sailed and handled.
She moved right along in spite of the 16 people on board. I imagine Cool Change would show her a clean pair of heels
when close hauled, but I know many cruising sailors who would be very happy with Flying Carpet's performance."
