K E L S A L L CATAMARANS

KSS P33 KaivitiKat

KSS KaivitiKat is a lightweight, slim hulled, displacement catamaran form is finding favour with operators for many different applications from private yachts to ferries. The low power required, the space and ride comfort are the main attractions. Shallow draft of just 50cm has been achieved on KaivitiKat by fitting the outboards within the length and depth of the boat.

The engines are offset inboard to allow step aboard from the marina. This draft allows the cat to operate in many areas where other craft cannot go. With the space available she is licenced to carry 18 passengers and 2 crew.

KaivitiKat is a power catamaran Kelsall design (in KiwiCat series) and built by her owners using KSS. She is simply arranged, 10m, twin outboard powered diplacement catamaran, which is ideal for economical cruising and shallow water exploration. KaivitiKat began as a KSS kit in New Zealand. KaivitiKat is ideal for day cruisers and fishing but is also capable of offshore passages. Hence, the short bridge-deck and trampoline, which we consdier to be just as important for power as for sailing.

The twin Evinrude, four stroke outboards give a maximum of 20 kts, with very comfortable cruising speed of 16kts. She runs well on one engine at 10-12 kits., at fuel consumption of 5 ltrs./hour. We are pleased to find that the resin infusion and the keep it simple approach by the owner/builder has resulted in a weight saving of half a tonne compared to our estimate.
